Purpose of the job
- This is a leadership role overseeing mortuary operations; however, the role also involves performing operational activities and reporting to the Branch Manager.
- The incumbent manages mortuary operations, performs advanced technical work, and provides strategic guidance within the funeral business.
- Lead embalming, restorative art, and complex reconstruction cases.
- Supervise and mentor intermediate and junior morticians. Establish and enforce mortuary standards, protocols, and best practices.
- Consult with families on specialized requests, cultural traditions, and complex cases.
- Collaborate with branch or regional managers on operational planning. Handle escalated client concerns with professionalism and empathy.
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory and ethical requirements across the mortuary team.
- To receive and prepare the deceased, for viewing and burial by embracing dressing, cosmetically and enhancing coffining them.
- Administering the entering and exiting corpse at the Mortuary and on systems.
Key Results Areas
Care Quality (Health Care)
- Conduct analysis using existing methodologies.
- Monitor and identify the effectiveness of corrective actions or continuous improvement initiatives.
Operational & Health Care Compliance
- Develop knowledge and understanding of the organization’s policies and procedures and of relevant regulatory codes and codes of conduct to ensure own work adheres to those standards.
- Obtain authorization from a supervisor or manager for any exceptions from mandatory procedure.
- Compile and maintain current and accurate data for all healthcare providers that must be credentialed by regulatory bodies. Involves working under supervision.
Operating machine or Equipment
- Operate complex equipment and machines, adjusting diverse variables to achieve the best possible outcomes in terms of quality and productivity.
- Also responsible for generating solutions to simple and recurring inefficiencies.
Equipment Maintenance and Repair
- Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment for emergency repairs and carry out preventive maintenance routines.
Personal Capability Building
- Develop own capabilities by participating in assessment and development planning activities as well as formal and informal training and coaching.
- Develop and maintain an understanding of relevant technology, external regulation and industry best practices through ongoing education, attending conferences and reading specialist media.
Work Scheduling and Allocation
- Design own monthly schedule and, if necessary, assign work to others to speed up office workflow and ensure high priority tasks are completed.
Patient Medical Records Management
- Produce accurate reports for others by collecting patient data from a variety of standard sources and inputting it into medical record systems.
- Provide appropriate codes to diagnoses and procedures for patient visits, as assigned.
• Review records for completeness, accuracy, and regulatory compliance.
Patient and Family Management
- Support relationships with patients and families by carrying out simple procedural tasks.
Championing Customer Service Excellence
- Handle bodies with dignity.
- Conduct regular meetings at the branch.
- Attend all other meetings as and when requested.
- Liaising branch with other departments, other managers of the business by creating effective working relationships.
- Development of staff and identification of training needs and creating growth in the department.
- Following company pickups, storage, viewing and delivery procedures.
- Following company burial procedures.
Mortuary & Funeral Services
- Monitoring Refrigerators – cleaning and fixing.
- Conduct continuous temperature checks in the mortuary.
- Arranging and distribution of funeral equipment.
- Coffining.
- Responsible for corpses entering and exiting the mortuary.
- Checking and monitoring the mortuary, ensure that mortuary register is duly completed and updated with the correct information of the deceased received kept and placed in a cooler daily in the morning when reporting to the branch and afternoon before leaving the branch.
- Ordering Chemicals for the mortuary.
- Keep record of all funeral equipment.
- Register and report all damaged funeral equipment.
- Responsible for receiving the deceased from drivers.
- Responsible for checking whether the first call sheet is completed appropriately.
- Ensure that the deceased is tagged (correctly identified) according to the Standard Operating procedures.
- Manage mortuary register.
- Allocate mortuary number to the deceased.
- Write mortuary shelf number to mortuary board.
- Collaborate with Branch Manger on the relevant schemes/packages for each funeral before coffining and service and service. Assist with pick-ups.
Qualifications/Experience
- Matric
- Advanced Diploma, Degree advantageous
- 3-5 years management experience
- 3-5 years working in a mortuary environment.
- Driver’s license
